She records the following data: Figure 9.6: Amelia’s Points X (hours practicing jump shot)Ĭonstruct a scatter plot and state if what Amelia thinks appears to be true. She notices that the number of points she scores in a game goes up in response to the number of hours she practices her jump shot each week. She wants to improve to play at the college level. The strength of a relationship is not always apparent in a scatterplot but we will see numerical measures of this in the future.Īmelia plays basketball for her high school. A stronger relationship has points clustered together closely while in a weaker one, points are more spread out. High values of one variable occurring with low values of the other variable.Īt this point we can think about the strength of a relationship as how tightly do the points on a scatterplot fit the linear pattern.High values of one variable occurring with high values of the other variable or low values of one variable occurring with low values of the other variable. On the other hand a negative (inverse) trend is seen when increasing x appears to cause y to decrease. If we do see a linear pattern, what sort of relationship is there? A positive trend is seen when increasing x also increases y. However, we only calculate a regression line if one of the variables helps to explain or predict the other variable. This line can will later be calculated through a process called linear regression. If we think that the points show a linear relationship, we would like to draw a line on the scatter plot. The linear relationship is strong if the points are close to a straight line, except in the case of a horizontal line where there is no relationship. Figure 9.2: Scatterplot ConfigurationsĪlthough we may see other shapes in a scatter plot, at this point we are only interested in applying these ideas when we see a linear pattern. The following scatterplot examples illustrate these concepts. When looking at a scatterplot you always want to note: You can determine the strength of the relationship by looking at the scatter plot and seeing how close the points are together. When you look at a scatterplot, you want to notice the overall pattern and any potential deviations from the pattern. A scatter plot shows a lot about the relationship between the variables. The most common and easiest way is a scatter plot. Consider a mathematical model (regression)īefore we take up the discussion of linear regression and correlation, we need to examine a way to display the relation between two variables x and y.Use numerical descriptions of the data and overall pattern (correlation, coefficient of determination).Look for an overall pattern and deviations from the pattern. When considering the relationship between two quantitative variables: An explanatory variable (also called x, independent variable, predictor variable) explains changes in the response variable. A response variable (also called y, dependent variable, predicted variable) measures or records an outcome of a study. When we are looking at bivariate data we first need to decide, if possible, does changing one variable seems to lead to a change in the other. This involves data that fits a line in two dimensions. Note that this does not imply that these ideas are “simple” but just that we are working with one independent variable ( x) and a linear relationship. In this chapter, you will be studying the “simple linear regression”. ![]() The type of data described in these examples is bivariate data - “bi” for two variables. The amount you pay a repair person for labor is often determined by an initial amount plus an hourly fee. In another example, your income may be determined by your education, your profession, your years of experience, and your ability. For example, is there a relationship between the grade on the second math exam a student takes and the grade on the final exam? If there is a relationship, what is the relationship and how strong is it? Professionals often want to know how two (or more) numeric variables are related. ![]() Linear regression and correlation can help you determine if an auto mechanic’s salary is related to his work experience.

The major disadvantage is that multiplication and division become much more complicated. The advantage of two's complement notation is that addition and subtraction may be performed using exactly the same hardware as for unsigned arithmetic no sign checking is needed. The same result is obtained by inverting all the bits and adding 1: –6 10 is 1001 2 +1 = 1010 2. The principle of two's complement notation is that the code for – b, where b is a binary number represented using n bits, is the code given by 2 n – b. It is common, therefore, to use a different notation for signed integers: two's complement. While this makes translation between binary and decimal numbers simple, the arithmetic operations of addition and subtraction require that the sign bits be checked before an operation can be performed on two numbers. Therefore, 0 110 2 might represent +6 10, while 1 110 2 would represent –6 10. The simplest approach is to set aside one bit as a sign bit. Negative integers require additional information. The simple translation of a decimal number into bits is sufficient for zero and positive integers. For hexadecimal notation, the letters A to F represent the decimal numbers 10 to 15. As with decimal notation, the most significant bit is on the left.įor the benefit of human beings, strings of bits may be grouped into sets of three or four and written using octal (base 8) or hexadecimal (base 16) notation. In base 2 arithmetic, 000 2 represents 0 10, 011 2 represents 3 10, and 111 2 represents 7 10. For example, a set of three bits would allow us to represent the decimal integers 0 to 7. ![]() The simplest form of coding is that of positive integers. ![]() The standards that have emerged are generally also designed such that a human being can interpret the data if necessary. ![]() There do, however, need to be standards, so that different systems can communicate. From the point of view of a computer or other digital system, no one system of coding is better than another. Thus, one integer or one character may be represented by a set of bits. These numbers and characters have to be coded in a form suitable for storage and manipulation by digital hardware. In general, information takes the form of numbers or characters. The Cold Crush Brothers, Rock Steady Crew, and Grandmaster Flash were just a few of Hip-Hop’s trailblazers that debuted on Wild Style’s silver screen. With Ahearn as producer and director, the three began embarking on a journey to gather the individuals who would be the faces of this landmark film.ĭeveloping its name from an abstract letter design made famous in the graffiti world by graff king Tracy 168, Wild Style featured some of the most prolific pioneers from all aspects of Hip-Hop. Fab 5 Freddy brought legendary graff artist Lee Quinones to meet Ahearn to discuss further the approach of filming graffiti and introducing it as a legitimate art form. Wild Style is arguably the very first movie and one of the very few that shows the true essence of what Hip Hop is about. We totally love arrows.Visit for more information We think arrows are a fascinating and diverse element of graffiti letterforms, providing artists and students with continuous possibilities for innovation and style. One New York artist and graffiti writer, Mare 139, actually creates beautiful, 3-dimensional sheet-metal sculptures that contain only arrows, with light and space as parts of his designs. From that simple beginning, the arrow has evolved into a multi-faceted, complex and autonomous art object of its own. So, early graff writers incorporated simple arrows and other basic design elements into their tags to make them stand out and grab attention. Or it can blast off of the side from which it protrudes, like a missile, as in the artwork of "The Rammelzee", known as Gothic Futurism. An arrow can organically follow the flow and direction of a letter, like a vine. An arrow can be drawn in all shapes and sizes thick and chunky or long and spindly, pointy or squared, single or with multiple ends. Graffiti artist Ezo says that every graffiti writer has his or her own arrow and it's true: the variations and design possibilities of an arrow are endless. An arrow can project out from any side of a letter, weaving in and out, backwards and forwards, and around in circles, across a two-dimensional surface, creating depth and rhythm. An arrow guides the eyes of the viewer in a specific direction. In graffiti art, however, an arrow is a powerful, visual tool that is often put together with letters to give them motion and dynamism. From studying the images of these early tags, we were able to determine that the complex variations of arrows we see in today's advanced Wildstyle graffiti letterforms originated from simple graffiti tags.Īn arrow is an internationally understood symbol that is used on signs to simply indicate direction, as in "Entrance" or "Exit". ![]() Many of these tags contained arrows, as well as stars, hearts, numbers, and crowns. ![]() In her groundbreaking book "Tag Town", Martha Cooper photographed vintage graffiti tags in her Washington Heights neighborhood, still visible from the early 1970's to 1980's (tags are those hard to read scribbles you see on mailboxes and other surfaces around most cities).
